Open for the Season

True Signs of Spring in Otsego County

While it seems that winter has lingered longer than necessary there are two welcome signs that spring is in the air.  The Fly Creek Cider Mill & Orchard and Mt. Vision Garden Center will reopen Friday, April 29th with a combined 211 years of operation, superior products and family-driven hospitality.

This year marks the 45th year for the Wilms family at the Mt. Vision Garden Center supplying the region with more than 400 annual and perennial varieties from their greenhouses off State Route 205 in Mt. Vision.  Spring is the family’s busiest season with customers returning for the variety and quality of flowers and plants that make a house a home.   The diversity of colorful hanging baskets is a specialty with a vast selection that will thrive throughout the summer.   “The growing season in Central New York is short so we grow most of our annuals in 4 ½ inch pots giving you a leg up to buying smaller plants in trays like the big-box stores,” says family member Ed Wilms. “Plus we grow them all right here so they are ready to go when you get home.”   The knowledgeable team will assist in your plant selection to ensure that you are envy of the neighborhood.

Another tradition opening on April 29 is the Fly Creek Cider Mill & Orchard in the hamlet of Fly Creek.  This year marks its 166th season with a cornucopia of specialty products, local favorites and Snack Barn delights.  While their core products are apples, cider, cheese and fudge the Mill has expanded its inventory to include much, much more.  This diversity is also reflected outside the Mill with opportunities for families to explore the Millpond boardwalk or challenge one another at the duck racer.   Their website now features local bike and walking routes allowing visitors to further explore the beauty of Fly Creek Valley.  “We are excited to reopen and welcome back our loyal friends who have supported our family business for so many years,” says Bill Michaels, owner of the Mill.  “From our Mill-aged, extra-sharp New York State cheddar to my Grandmother’s Molasses Crinkles we will have everyone’s favorites on opening day.”
Mt. Vision and Fly Creek are just two examples of the many seasonal family farms and businesses that return each spring making Central New York a great place to live, work and visit.
